Date Out Of Your League: My Friend Mark Tells His Story

Let me tell you a story about my buddy, Mark.

Mark and I played football together in college. Mark was this stocky guy, 5'3" on a good day, beer gut, and balding. He certainly wasn't what I would call good looking.

Freshman year we arrived on campus several weeks early for pre-season. In the training room was this gorgeous girl - a sophomore with long blond hair, 5'7" with legs that went on forever. She couldn't have been more than a buck and a quarter soaking wet (yes, I had fantasies!). She was smart, she was funny, and she certainly didn't look like she had any trouble finding boyfriends.

Her name was Michelle.

Mark and I roomed together during pre-season that first year. Pre-season was grueling - practice at 7am in 100 degree heat, lunch at noon, afternoon practice 2 to 6pm, dinner afterwards. By 8pm most of us were falling in bed, exhausted, dreading doing it all over again the next day.

Mark told me he was going to ask Michelle out once pre-season was over. I laughed at him, telling him he didn't have a chance. Mark looked at me funny and asked, "Why not?" I told him it was simple

Michelle was gorgeous, 5'7" and there wasn't a snowball's chance in hell she'd go out on a date with him.

As I ran through all the reasons I thought Michelle would turn Mark down, this quizzical look came over his face. It never dawned on Mark that Michelle would turn him down for any of the reasons I had outlined to him.

And my reasons didn't stop Mark.

A couple weeks into the semester, I was walking home to my dorm on a Thursday night, alone. Walking toward me, in the direction of town, was Mark. He had a woman on his arm. As he got closer I recognized the woman - it was Michelle!
